On Encontros (2006) and the Humanistic Imaginary of Pierre-Marie Goulet

Abstract

The article reflects on Encontros (2006), by Pierre-Marie Goulet, second film of a trilogy the French director made in Portugal. This reflection aims to account for the ethnographic, artistic and anthropologic work that he developed through his film, establishing relationships between popular poetry, the fishing community of Furadouro, the film by Paulo Rocha, Mudar de Vida (1966), the music of Alentejo and Corsica, and signalling the encounters between Michel Giacometti, António Reis and the labouring people that engaged with artistic expressions, such as the peasant and poet Virgínia Dias. Goulet works by free associations of images and sounds, in thematic units that accumulate and deepen around the poliphony of voices and sonorities, through the repetition of imagens that accrue different dramatic meanings throughout the film. Together with the other films of the triptych, Encontros contributes to rethinking ethno-fiction and the documentary in the context of Portuguese cinema and visual anthropology.
