Ethics of Slow Cinema: Slowness and hesitation in contemporary cinema

Keywords: Slow Cinema, contemporary cinema, slowness, ethics, time-image

Abstract

Recently, film theorists and critics have pointed out the appearance of a “cinema of slowness” in the past three decades. This article recovers the concept of Slow Cinema and seeks possible historical and cultural connections with experiences of deceleration of time. Categories such as flâneur (Benjamin), blasé (Simmel) and the thoughts about hesitation in Bergson’s philosophy already pointed to the decompression of the duration of the interval between stimulus and response. The concept of time-image (Deleuze) helps explore the emergence of an ethics of slowness in modern cinema. Finally, through the analysis of films by Wim Wenders, Abbas Kiarostami and Cristi Puiu, the article argues that Slow Cinema invests in the temporalization of passages of cause and effect as a way of producing favorable conditions for the reconnection between a subject and the world.
