Gestures of the Essay Film: Agnès Varda’s Cinécriture and Trinh T. Minh-ha’s Speak Nearby
Abstract
This article seeks to promote a reflection on the format of the essay-film, focusing on some of its gestures, such as the intertwining of form and content, image and thought, personal and political domains, as well as the traces of self-reflexivity in the fabric of the films. Starting from the analysis of L’Opéra-Mouffe (1958) and Daguerréotypes (1975) by French filmmaker Agnès Varda, we will discuss the gesture of a ‘writing beyond oneself’, present in her cinécriture. Based on the thinking of the Vietnamese filmmaker Trinh T. Minh-ha and her work Reassemblage (1982), we will see how her enunciation proposes an engagement with the image through a decolonized look and a way of relational representation, which she defines as ‘speak nearby’. Through these two gestures proposed by the filmmakers, we will bring the essay film closer to the ethnographic film, focusing on the aesthetic and narrative potential of these two audiovisual writings.
