Abstract

This article examines how the concept of the figural, as developed by Jean-François Lyotard, is present in contemporary film theory. Starting from a synthetic recapitulation of the conceptualization of the figure made by Lyotard in the work Discours, figure (1973), the article describes how Jacques Aumont’s interest in the possibility of the image to think is configured; how Nicole Brenez relates the autonomy of the film image to reality; how Philippe Dubois creates a typology of instances of meaning in the image; how D.N. Rodowick thematizes the figural as a historiographical concept; how Jacques Rancière reflects on the nature of cinematic narrative in its relation with representation; and how Fernão Pessoa Ramos describes a particular mode of documentary staging related to the figural itself. The exposition is complemented by illustrative examples of film analysis that dialogue with the problems raised by figural theory.
