Author Biography

Ana Isabel Soares, Universidade do Algarve e CIAC – Centro de Investigação em Artes e Comunicação, 8005-139 Faro

Ana Isabel Soares holds a PhD in the Literary Theory Program (FLUL, 2003), with a thesis on David Wojanrowic (available here), and a post-doctorate in the same Program on poetry and Portuguese documentaries. She has given lectures and taught seminars on Portuguese film and on the relationship between film and literature.

Currently a full Professor at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences of Algarve University, she has taught in disciplines such as Film and Literature, Film History, and Theory of Image. For many years she was an active member of the direction and assembly of the Faro film club, of which she is an honorary member. She is a full member of the CIAC-Center for Communication and Arts (UAlg/ESTC). She co-edited (with Mirian Tavares) a collection of essays on film studies; translated (with Merja de Mattos-Parreira) the Finnish epic poem Kalevala (Dom Quixote, 2013), and four of Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht’s books into Portuguese. She worked at the Camões Institute (2013-2014) and at the Secretary of State of Basic and Secondary Education (2011-2012), where she was part of the team that created the Portuguese Film Plan for schools. Ana Isabel Soares was the first President of AIM.
