Ethics and aesthetics: the role of indexing on reception of a movie

Abstract

From the analysis of the short film documentary A queima (Diego Benevides, 2013), we discuss the relationship between indexing, ethics and aesthetics in contemporary Brazilian documentary based on comments made by Noël Carroll (2005 ), Fernão Ramos (2001, 2008 ), Roger Odin (2012, 2005) on the delimitation of the documentary field.

PhD professor in Digital Media Course (Demid) and in the Postgraduate Communication Programme (PPGC) of the Federal University of Paraíba. He is graduated in Social Communication, Master in Sociology and coordinator of the Study Group on Cinema and Audiovisual (Gecine). Filmmaker, he had directed several short, medium and feature documentaries films in super -8, 16mm and video ("Bom dia Maria de Nazaré” , O senhor do engenho” ,"Crias da Piollin", "Homens", "O rebeliado” and "O diário de Márcia”, among others ), all of them awarded in festivals in Brazil and abroad, including the JVC Grand Prize of the 26th Tokyo Video Festival 2004.  He studied direct cinema documentary at VARAN Atelier (Paris, France) in 1982 and 1986. Author of “Photography in Paraiba: An inventory through the portrait (1850-1950)”, “Light and Shadow : imaginary meanings in German expressionist film photography” (2013) and “Film Noir: The shadow as an aesthetic and narrative experience”.
